Hospice pond, garden tour affirms life

The annual self-guided tour will include about 10 private gardens. It takes place Sept. 12.

WALLA WALLA — Whether it’s the peaceful sound of a breeze through the leaves or the glory of bright, beautiful flowers, a stroll through a garden calms you, affirms life and helps you set aside sorrow and fear.

At the upcoming Walla Walla Community Hospice Pond and Garden Tour, Sept. 12, you can do just that.

According to Laurie Klicker, marketing coordinator at Walla Walla Community Hospice, the annual self-guided garden tour will include about 10 private gardens, each with some type of water feature. "Most are new, with a couple from the early years of the tour. We’ll have vendors, artists and entertainment," she said. The tour runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., tickets are available at Bright’s Candies & Gifts, 11 E. Main Street.

The relaxing tour is a fundraiser for Hospice to help provide services for patients who have a limited life expectancy.

In addition to events offered by the organization, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer to help patients, and training is provided.

Although exact dates haven’t yet been determined, another patient volunteer training session will be held in the near future. These training sessions are required for working with the patients. The organization also utilizes the talents of volunteers for nonpatient care jobs.

"We need a good pool of volunteers," Klicker said. "That way we can get a good match of personalities and skills." That also enables volunteers who need to take a break for awhile, to do so. "We’re always actively recruiting."

As far as services, Hospice also offers help for families as well as direct patient care.

Grief support groups for those who have lost loved ones are available. There’s no charge, but a person must register. These sessions are held periodically throughout the year, with the next one starting Sept. 23, each Wednesday through Nov. 18.

The organization encourages the patient to express his or her wishes and communicate. "We want to also provide support for the family, a helping hand to lift them up," Klicker said.
