Heat hit the Wa-Hi Blue Devils' football field as practice for the 2009 season got underway Wednesday.
Wa-Hi coach Marc Yonts moves the Blue Devils through a slower pace during this first week of practice.
"Our athletic trainer Chris Eastep keeps track of the temperature, and we’re pounding water into the kids," Yonts said. "We have some kids who didn’t do much over the summer, and some who came in ready to go, so we’re doing a lot of walking and talking this week. We’ll begin the more traditional practices after school next week."
Wa-Hi continues two-a-day practices this week, from 9 a.m. until noon and from 3 to 6 p.m. through Saturday.
Practices will be from 3:45 to 6 p.m. beginning next week, with two sessions on Saturday (7-10 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.).
More than 100 players, from grades nine through 12, have turned out for the 2009 season, and Yonts expects more to turn out by next week.
Wa-Hi opens the season with a non-conference game against Hermiston at Borleske Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.
