MILTON-FREEWATER — An 8-0 run in the latter stages of the fourth quarter here Tuesday night lifted Mac-Hi to a 37-33 victory over Waitsburg-Prescott in the girls high school basketball opener for both schools.

W-P’s Kristin Potter knocked down a free-throw line jumper at the 4:20 mark of the final period to break a 29-all tie and give W-P its final lead of the game.

Belen Betancourt knocked down one of two free throws to bring Mac-Hi within one, 31-30, with 3:58 on the clock, then converted a lay-in opportunity with 3:08 to go to give the Pioneers the lead for good, 32-31.

Andrea Roeder added a jumper with 2:25 left to increase Mac-Hi’s edge to three points, 34-31, before Betancourt delivered the knock-out punch — a 3-point field goal she banked in from the right wing — at the 1:39 mark.

"I told her ‘Great shot, but don’t ever do that again,’" Mac-Hi coach Curtis Pumphrey said.

Roeder ended up with 14 points and Betancourt chipped in with 13.

"Give Waitsburg credit," Pumphrey said. "They stuck with it the whole way through."

Six-foot post Genesis Pearson posted a double-double for W-P — 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

"She did a tremendous job," Pumphrey said. "She was a great presence for them."

W-P outrebounded Mac-Hi, 51-21, but did itself in with 33 turnovers.

"The girls fought hard and played hard, but the biggest problem was taking care of the ball," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "We were in it until the end. We ran the floor well and played good defense."

Both teams will host non-conference games on Friday. Mac-Hi opposes Grant Union and Waitsburg-Prescott takes on Weston-McEwen.
