MILTON-FREEWATER — Mac-Hi enjoyed an 11-8 lead after one quarter, but managed just 17 points in the final three periods here Tuesday night as Waitsburg-Prescott soared to a 46-28 victory in the high school boys basketball opener for both schools.

W-P used an 11-4 advantage in the second quarter to fashion a 19-15 lead at halftime. Lucan Gerke — who posted game highs of 10 points and 11 rebounds — had four points in period two and Zac Alexenko added a 3-point field goal.

Five W-P players tallied at least one point in the third quarter as the visitors upped their lead to nine, 28-19.

The Pioneers followed up a 2-for-15 performance from the field in the second quarter with a 1-of-10 showing in the third.

Waitsburg-Prescott flew out of sight in the fourth quarter by scoring 18 points compared to nine for Mac-Hi. Gerke and Ben Kiefel set the pace with four points apiece.

W-P grabbed 60 rebounds in the game. The Pioneers managed 39.

"The kids battled on the glass (and were) getting loose balls," W-P coach T.J. Scott said. "We finally got some shots to drop.

"Our defense stepped up," Scott said. "Any time you can hold a varsity boys basketball team under 30 points, you’re doing some things right."

Jake Knight and Nick Stanford led Mac-Hi with five points each.

"We got destroyed on the boards," Mac-Hi coach Nick Ellis said. "Early in the game, we attacked their zone intelligently. We didn’t in the second half.

"I can’t fault the kids’ effort," Ellis said. "I don’t want to take anything away from Waitsburg. They are a good ball club."

Both teams will be at home Friday night. The Pioneers welcome Grant Union to the Mac-Hi gym while W-P entertains Weston-McEwen.
