Pirate boys drop cold-shooting Dayton boys

DAYTON — Pomeroy’s defense held Dayton to 12 first-half points and the Pirates were never headed as they toppled the Bulldogs 57-42 here Thursday in a boys Southeast B District cross division prep basketball game.

It was the season opener for both schools.

Dayton outscored Pomeroy 30-29 over the final two quarters, but the Pirates 28-12 halftime advantage was too much to overcome.

"We just had trouble catching the ball," Dayton coach Roy Ramirez said of his team’s 19 turnovers.

Shooting was also an issue for the Bulldogs, who were 15-for-65 from the field and 10-for-28 from the free-throw line.

"You shoot like that and you should get blown out even more than we were," Ramirez said.

Pomeroy’s outside-inside duo of guard Trevor Koberstein and post Justin Ruark combined for 35 points. Koberstein led the way with 19 points and Ruark added 16.

Garrett Turner was Dayton’s leader with 12 points on 4-for-21 shooting from the floor. Colton Bickelhaupt, and Kroft Sunderland tallied seven points each for the Bulldogs and Dain Henderson and Hayden Fullerton contributed six points each.

"They got us in the second quarter when we started shooting from the outside too much," Ramirez said. "It just wasn’t our night. If we shoot our free throws the way I know we can, we are right in the game."

Dayton travels to St. John-Endicott Saturday for another district cross division game. Pomeroy travels to Tri-Cities Prep tonight and entertains Touchet Tuesday in cross division contests.
