DAYTON — Shooting, from the field and from the line, proved to be Dayton’s downfall here Thursday night as the Bulldogs opened the girls prep basketball season with a 51-42 loss to Pomeroy in a Southeast B District cross division game in the Dayton gym.

The Bulldogs put up 15 more shots from the field than did the Pirates, but they cashed in three fewer field goals. And while Pomeroy made just 14-of-34 free-throw attempts, Dayton was even less effective, sinking 9-of-26.

"We talked about that after the game, how we could have turned this game around simply by shooting a little better," Bulldogs coach Scott Hudson said. "I don’t know if it was first-game jitters or what."

The game was a rematch of Dayton’s final game of the 2008-09 season, a two-point loss to the Pirates in a district tournament loser-out contest in the Dietrich Dome on the Walla Walla Community College campus. But this was a different cast of players.

"They graduated four seniors and we graduated nine," Hudson said. "My group this year includes three sophomores and four freshmen, so I was very impressed with how they came back and never quit. It was very encouraging to me."

After jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead, the Bulldogs found themselves in a 17-10 hole at the end of the first quarter. Pomeroy built its advantage to 12 points, 31-19, at halftime, and Dayton trailed by 14 points with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

"We were able to cut the lead to three points," Hudson said. "Then we made some turnovers, made some fouls and Pomeroy was able to pull away again."

Haylee Koller, a 5-foot-6 sophomore transfer from Lacrosse-Washtucna, led he Pirates with 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the floor. Melissa Bartlow added 10 points, Kindsey Bott nine and Karlie Martin eight.

Kayla Dedloff scored 11 points, Nicole Martin 10 and Kayla Turner eight for the Bulldogs.

Dayton travels to St. John-Endicott Saturday for another district cross division game. Pomeroy plays at Tri-Cities Prep tonight in a cross division game and is idle Saturday before entertain Touchet on Tuesday in yet another cross division contest.
