Whitman College women's basketball destroys Pomona-Pitzer 80-41

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Big nights from juniors Anna Forge and Jessica Brice sparked Whitman College to an 80-41 non-conference women’s victory over Pomona-Pitzer here Friday night.


Making eight of 11 shots from the floor, Forge combined 16 points with 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Brice nailed four of five 3-point attempts in piecing together a 14-point, five-rebound night.


Whitman, now 2-3 on the season, also got 10 points, four assists and three rebounds from first-year guard Kelly Peterson, who made five of her six shots from the floor.


Lara Stinson-Hughes pocketed a game-high 17 points to pace Pomona-Pitzer, which saw its record slip to 1-4.


The Sagehens made just four of 24 field goal attempts in the first half as the Missionaries raced away to a 37-15 lead the break.


Whitman kept up the pressure in the second half, making 19 of 30 shots (63.3 percent) from the floor over the final 20 minutes. Those post-intermission numbers included a five-of-nine showing from the 3-point line.


Senior Hilary White added nine points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Senior Michelle Krall, continuing her rehab from injury, chipped in with nine points (four of five from the floor), three assists and two steals in 18 minutes off the bench.


First-year forward Mary Madden contributed eight points and seven boards. All 10 Missionaries who played managed to dent the scoring and rebounding columns, and all but two had at least one assist.


As a team, Whitman took 17 more shots than the Sagehens and finished with a 52.9 percent shooting percentage. Pomona-Pitzer shot just 25.5 percent on the night.


The Missionaries also outrebounded their hosts 50-23.
