MILTON-FREEWATER — A 16-3 DeSales’ scoring run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference here Tuesday in non-conference girls basketball action.

The Irish took advantage of their run to pull out a 46-41 victory over Mac-Hi.

"We were down eight and then outscored them 16-3," DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. "We played pretty well down the stretch for a first game.

We pressed 90 percent of the game, and may have worn them out a little."

The Irish and Pioneers battled to a 22-22 standoff at intermission.

The Pioneers grabbed momentary control with a 14-8 run in the third period and opened the fourth quarter with a bucket to go up eight.

"They got on a run and we had some bad possessions," Duncan said of the third period. "(And) they hit a couple of wide open 3s (both by Belen Betancourt)."

Caitlin Duncan posted game-high numbers in points, 21, and in rebounds, 17, to lead the Irish to the win.

The Pioneers got balanced scoring as Sierra Burchell led a trio of Pioneers in double digits. Burchell led the way with 15, Betancourt finished with 14 and Andrea Roeder chipped in 10.

Jamie Majerus added six for DeSales as the Irish won their season opener, and host Mac-Hi Tuesday.

The Pioneers play Thursday in the opening round of the Columbia River Clash in Umatilla.
