Celebrate Christmas with German carols

A German Christmas sing-along, sponsored by the language departments at Walla Walla University, Walla Walla Valley Academy and Walla Walla High School, will be Saturday and Dec. 12 at the Melvin K. West Fine Arts Center at WWU.

It's an annual event that has grown in popularity enough to warrant two sessions, said Curt Schafer, a foreign language teacher at Wa-Hi.

The event is fun for German speakers and those who come just to listen, he said.

"We sing Christmas songs in German, some that you're probably familiar with -- 'Silent Night,' 'O Christmas Tree' -- and others that may be new to you. We hand out the music and words so everybody can follow along and sing along if they like," Schafer said.

Saturday's event will feature Julia Burg, who will talk about Christmas celebrations in her native country, Germany.

The sing-alongs, which begin at 10 a.m. in room 208, are informal and attract many who claim some German heritage, as well as those who come simply for the experience, he added.

"Some people sing a lot, others a little, but everyone is welcome."
