Margaret Sutherland

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Former Weston resident Margaret Evelyn Sutherland, 92, died Dec. 5, 2009, at her home.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Weston Cemetery. Arrangements are through DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home and Crematory, Corvallis.

Memorial contribution may be made to Weston Public Library, 108 E. Main St., Weston, OR 97886 or the Weston Community Church, 206 S. Water St., Weston, OR 97886.

Mrs. Sutherland was born Nov. 17, 1917, in Robinette, Ore., which is now covered by the Snake River, to Thomas Jefferson and Mabel Carothers Houston. She graduated from Echo (Ore.) High School in 1935, and began working with her mother cooking for ranch crews. She married Russell Mahlon Sutherland in 1938. He preceded her in death.

Along with her parents, she bought a home in Weston in 1948. She became the city librarian in 1953, a position she held for 42 years. She loved Oregon and was proud to be a fourth-generation Oregonian. The Weston Library is noted for its plethora of Oregon history material because of her knowledge and interest in Oregon.

She was a friend and confidante to many in Weston. She felt her job in life was to be of service to everyone. Her favorite sentence was, "What can I do to help?" She enjoyed spending time with her family, her dogs and books, especially mysteries and Oregon history.

Mrs. Sutherland is survived by a son, Johnnie David Sutherland of Athens, Ga.; a daughter, Julianne Sutherland of Corvallis, Ore.; a brother, Charles Houston of Bend, Ore.; a granddaughter, Angela Jean Trump; and a great-grandson, Harley Chappell.
