Free throws key Mac-Hi victory over Pilot Rock

UMATILLA — Led by Nick Stanford’s 8-for-11 free throws in the fourth quarter, Mac-Hi’s boys basketball team nipped Pilot Rock, 54-48, at the Umatilla Tournament here Thursday.


The victory gives the Pioneers a 3-1 record on the season.


Stanford led Mac-Hi with 14 points. Chris Brown and Will Riley chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.


Kendall Brown led the Pioneers with a game-high 10 rebounds.


Shane Lazinka led the Rockets with 16 points and nine rebounds.


Mac-Hi trailed 15-12 after one quarter, but took the halftime lead at 24-22.


The Rockets led 33-30 after three quarters, but the Pioneers regained the lead early in the final period.


"We made our free throws down the stretch, and that was the difference," Pioneer coach Nick Ellis said. "We took the lead, and they had to foul us. Nick Stanford went 8-for-11 in the fourth quarter and Will Riley went 3-for-4."


Mac-Hi plays host Umatilla today at 7:30 p.m.
