HERMISTON -- Former longtime Wildhorse Mountain resident Hazel De Ette Abel, 86, died Dec. 10, 2009, at Regency Hermiston Rehabilitation and Care Center.
A memorial gathering will be 1-4 p.m. Friday at Weston (Ore.) Memorial Hall. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Abel was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Paonia, Colo., to Shirley Lee and Elsie Maye Hill Moore. She attended a two room schoolhouse for two years and in 1929 her family moved to Salem and then to Cascade Locks, Ore., in 1930. She moved to Cottage Grove, Ore., in 1939 and graduated from high school in 1940.
She married Milford "Bud" Abel on Feb. 16, 1946, in Pendleton. They purchased some land on Wildhorse Mountain and moved there in 1951. They lived there until 2006 when they moved to Milton Freewater and then to Hermiston earlier this year.
She was a member of the Weston United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and the Saturday Afternoon Club That Meets On Wednesday. She enjoyed sewing, wild mountain flowers, watching wild animals, traveling, playing cards, playing the organ and listening to music.
Mrs. Abel is survived by her husband; a son, Mack Abel of Hermiston; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Moore.
