Extreme weather conditions this morning have shut down several school districts in Washington and Oregon, including:
Walla Walla Public Schools, College Place Public Schools, Prescott School District, Touchet School District, the Milton-Freewater School District, and the Athena-Weston School District.
Students in Columbia and Dayton school districts are to start school two hours late. The Columbia School District notes on its Web site that kindergarten and preschool morning classes are canceled.
As of 5:45 a.m. today, all major routes through Umatilla County in Oregon were closed, including Interstate 84 and Highway 11, which runs through Milton-Freewater and connects into Washington state. The Oregon Department of Transportation reports the shutdowns are due to trucks blocking and extremely icy conditions.
Roadblocks are not manned at all highways, according to ODOT, but warns of black ice and severe icy conditions, advising travelers to stay home.
