Walla Walla-area farmer to serve on state ag committee

A Walla Walla wheat farmer is one of five appointees chosen to serve on the Washington Farm Service Agency State Committee.

Steve Hair will serve on the committee that oversees the agency's activities, including carrying out the state agricultural conservation programs, resolving appeals from the agriculture community and helping to keep producers informed about FSA programs.

Appointees were announced Monday by the Obama Administration. Hair is a former member and chair of the Walla Walla FSA County Committee. He also served as president of the Walla Walla Association of Wheat Growers.

He is joined on the committee by Chairman Lennie Davis of Coulee City; Larry DeHaan of Lynden; Don Olmstead Jr. of Grandview; and Jesus Limon of East Wenatchee.

"These individuals will work with the USDA to help farmers and ranchers build and maintain successful operations that produce the safe, nutritious food supply that America needs while spurring economic development in our nation's rural communities," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a prepared statement.
