MILTON-FREEWATER — Lenora M. Hayes, 89, died Dec. 18, 2009, at the Evergreen of Milton-Freewater Rehabilitation Center, 120 Elzora St.

A funeral services will be Monday 2 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel, 902 S. Main St.

Contributions can be made to the First Christian Church through the funeral home.

The youngest of 13 children, Mrs. Hayes was born July 12, 1920, in Milton, to James and Carrie Phillips Sams. She was raised on the family farm in Cache Hollow up the Walla Walla River Road. She lived her entire life in the Milton-Freewater area. She attended local schools and after her schooling was completed, she worked on the family farm.

On June 30, 1943, she married Richard E. "Dick" Hayes in Weston. The couple farmed in the area for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Milton-Freewater Garden Club. She always looked forward to her yearly travels with her family. She also enjoyed playing bunco. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1998.

She is survived by a son, Donald Hayes of Beaverton, Ore.; a brother, Leonard Sams of Tacoma, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
