CATHLAMET, Wash. — A trio of Pomeroy wrestlers were crowned as champions in their respective weight classes here Saturday as the Pirates claimed the championship of the annual Down River Challenge.
Pomeroy emerged victorious in a 16-team field made up of Class 2A, 1A and B schools.
Individual titles were claimed by Tory Knebel at 160 pounds, Klyntin Bott at 189, and Mat Slaybaugh at 215 pounds.
Knebel pinned Kolton Palmer of Darington in round two of the 160-pound championship match, Bott decisiones teammate Tyler Reisdorph, 7-5, to win at 189, and Slaybaugh pinned fellow Pirate Ethan McGee in the opening period of the 215-pound title tilt.
"It was a great day," Pomeroy coach Derek Shawley said. "We left Pomeroy on Thursday and went to Irrigon to wrestle Heppner and Irrigon. We spent the night in Goldendale and went on to Cathlamet (40 miles west of Kelso). The kids are tired, but wrestled great. We’re ready to come home."
