WALLA WALLA — Authorities have identified a local woman killed in a head-on collision early Friday.

Shannon R. Elliott, 23, of Waitsburg, died after the truck she was driving collided with a logging truck heading west on U.S. Highway 12 near Airport Road about 4 a.m., according to reports.

Elliott was apparently traveling east in the westbound lanes when she collided with the semi, whose driver unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The crash caused a fire, and significant damage to the semi, closing parts of the highway for almost five hours. The driver of the semi was not seriously injured.

Walla Walla County Coroner Frank Brown used dental records to positively identify Elliott as the victim. Brown listed Elliott’s cause of death as blunt force trauma.
