US Flag Code: No flags on trees

This is in response to Larry Hetterly of Milton-Freewater’s letter to the editor in the Dec. 9 Union-Bulletin concerning placement of flags on the Christmas tree at First Avenue and Main Street in Walla Walla.

Mr. Hetterly claims he was saddened that the flags were left off this year’s tree because "some people found them objectionable."

The reason they were left off this year’s and future years’ trees is because placing flags on the tree is in violation of U.S. Flag Code Title 36 U.S.C. Chapter 10-176(b)(d)(e), which was amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress, on July 7, 1976.

However, bunting is approved and is available for this purpose from flag stores.

Perhaps Mr. Hetterly could purchase this bunting and donate it to the organization that erects the Christmas tree each year. I am sure its members would appreciate receiving the bunting. Perhaps they would even like a helping hand from him with putting up the tree.
