HEPPNER — Host Heppner bolted to a 23-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back as the Mustangs raced to a 56-47 victory over Mac-Hi in the first round of a girls holiday basketball tournament here Monday night.

"That’s our MO right now," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Pumphrey said after watching his team slip to a 4-5 season record. "We dig a hole and then spend the rest of the night trying to crawl out of it. We threw everything at them, but Heppner shot lights out and ran the floor real well. They are the best team we’ve faced this season and are going to do real well in their league this year."

Torri Loogren scored 14 points to lead a balanced Mustangs offense. Jessica Hughes added 13 points, Brynna Rust totaled nine, Erin Price contributed seven and Lindsay Cutsforth and Joanna Patton chipped in with six points each.

That was in sharp contrast with the Pioneers, who got all but two of their 47 points from a trio of girls.

Andrea Roeder led the way with 18 points and Sierra Burchell and Belen Betencourt were also in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Kasey Erm was the only Pioneer to break into the scoring column with a single two-point field goal.

"We’re kind of a three-headed team right now," Pumphrey said. "The good thing is, we’re still scoring in the 40s and 50s. Depth is a concern for us, and we need to get to work on the defensive end."

The Pioneers will be back in action here today at 1 p.m. when they take on Grant Union in the tournament’s consolation game. The game will be a rematch of a Dec. 4 contest in Milton-Freewater in which the Pioneers defeated the Prospectors 44-31.
