Pioneer boys shut down Dufur at Heppner tournament, 67-47

HEPPNER — Mac-Hi limited Dufur to 15 second-half points here Tuesday in boys basketball action at the Heppner Tournament.

And the Pioneers built an eight-point halftime lead into a 67-47 victory.

"In the second half, our defense got better," Mac-Hi coach Nick Ellis said. "We were able to get things on a little better and shut them down."

The Pioneers doubled up on the Rangers with a 24-12 advantage after the first quarter, but the Rangers answered to cut the Pioneer lead to 40-32 at intermission.

"We had a good first quarter," Ellis said. "They made a pretty good run in the second quarter, but our kids stepped it up (in the second half)."

Steven Begay led the Rangers with 20 points.

Nick Stanford’s all-around game led the Pioneers. Stanford was one of three Pioneers to reach double digits as he scored 13 to go with a team-leading six rebounds and a team-leading five assists.

Kendall Brown led the Mac-Hi offense with 16 points, and Ryley Croghan finished with 14.

The Pioneers improve to 4-6 on the season and host Riverside on Dec. 28.

"We’re getting there," Ellis said of the Pioneers’ progress. "We’re starting to shoot the ball better and starting to look like a basketball team. We are starting to play as a unit."
