Irish boys can't match Sunnyside Christian in 75-33 loss

The Knights' size and experience is too much for DeSales, which takes the 75-33 loss Wednesday night.

WALLA WALLA — Sunnyside Christian made it look easy Wednesday night during a 75-33 victory over DeSales in a non-league boys basketball game at the Irish gym.

The Knights led 24-2 after one quarter and built on the lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

Six-foot-five post Kevin De Jong scored 20 points for Sunnyside Christian and secured a game-high 17 rebounds.

De Jong dominated the low block in the opening period with 10 points and eight boards. Tim De Vries added six points in the period.

DeSales played the Knights on competitive terms in the second quarter thanks in part to a pair of 3-point bombs off the hand of guard Shea Crowley, who led the Irish with nine points on the night.

But even those long-distance baskets could not prevent the visitors from increasing their lead to 26, 38-12, by halftime.

Steven Broersma, a 6-6 junior, picked up eight points in the third quarter as the Knights raised their margin to 31, 56-25. Trevor Wagenaar and Steven Bosma contributed four points each in the frame.

The Irish got 3-pointers from Crowley and Victor Mata, and a three-point play from Nick Wales that accounted for most of their scoring in the eight minutes that followed intermission.

More Knights’ balance resulted in a 19-8 advantage in the final stanza. Sunnyside Christian had seven players score at least one point during that time.

"They’re good," DeSales coach Mike Giusti said. "They lost only one player from last year. They’re going to be some teams we don’t match up with physically."

Matt Wujek had nine rebounds for the Irish.

"Matt played his guts out," Giusti said. "Lucas (Fazzari) and Paul (Elmenhurst) took the ball to the basket. They all worked hard."

The Irish played without Pat Richard, who suffered a concussion at the end of the football season. He has three practices under his belt and is expected to return to action Jan. 5 when DeSales hosts Weston-McEwen, Giusti said.

Next up for the Irish will be the Blue Mountain Officials’ Association Shamrock Shootout next Tuesday and Wednesday on the Whitman College campus.
