Walla Walla resident Lela Mavis Bates, 73, died Dec. 26, 2009, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center, 1710 Plaza Way.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday at Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt Cremations & Funeral Services, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362. The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, followed by a graveside service and interment at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens, 300 S.E. Myra Road, College Place.

Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice, through the funeral home.

Mrs. Bates was born on May 3, 1936, at Competition, Mo., to Lloyd Newton and Darless Ada Todd Prock. She grew up in Milton-Freewater. She was on the Pioneer Posse Drill Team and was one of the Umatilla County Fair Court Princesses in 1953. She graduated from McLoughlin High School in 1954.

She and Cliff Bates were married July 22, 1956, in Redlands, Calif. They lived in Renton, Wash., where she worked in the personnel department at The Boeing Company for more than 30 years. She retired in 1987. The couple returned to Walla Walla in 1992.

She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, at the home; one daughter, Becki Teal Merry of Kennewick; three sisters, Pauline Burney and Claribel Nixon, both of Walla Walla, and Jean Tomlinson, of Pasco; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Prock.
