MILTON-FREEWATER — Six-foot-4 sophomore center Marco Carranza scored 20 points and caressed 14 rebounds here Monday night to lead Riverside to a 52-39 victory over Mac-Hi in a non-conference boys basketball game in the Pioneers’ gym.

The loss resulted in a 4-7 overall record for the Pioneers at night’s end.

Carranza and Matt Hyder helped the Pirates grab a 13-7 lead after one quarter with four points apiece.

Riverside held a 9-0 advantage before Ryley Croghan stroked a 3-pointer with 1:48 on the clock to get Mac-Hi in the scoring column.

The Pioneers missed their first nine shots prior to Croghan’s effort from beyond the arc.

Riverside expanded its lead back to nine, 25-16, by the end of the second quarter. Carranza led the way with seven points. He ended the half 5-of-6 from the field.

Mac-Hi fell further behind in the third quarter despite six points from Kendall Brown and 46-percent shooting from the floor (6-for-13).

The Pirates shot 54 percent from the field (7-of-13) in the period. A half-dozen points from Carranza and a handful more contributed by Chase Simpson did their part to extend Riverside’s margin to 11, 40-29, heading into the last eight minutes.

Nick Stanford drew Mac-Hi to within seven, 46-39, with a 3-point goal at the 2:25 mark.

But it proved to be too little, too late.

Hyder joined Carranza in double figures with 12 points for Riverside.

Brown paced the Pioneers with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Croghan chipped in with 11 points for Mac-Hi.

The Pirates won the rebounding battle, 42-33, and were guilty of just 15 turnovers compared with 20 for the Pioneers.

"The kids played hard," Mac-Hi coach Nick Ellis said. "I’m not going to fault their effort.

"We weren’t sharp," Ellis said. "We didn’t play very smart at times. We tried to force things when we didn’t need to."

Mac-Hi plays at Stanfield tonight.
