Post Falls nips Wa-Hi boys in overtime

Gary Winston and Michael Weisner combine for 60 points in the 84-75 overtime loss in Coeur d' Alene.

COEUR D’ALENE — Despite a combined 60 points from Gary Winston and Michael Weisner, Wa-Hi lost a first-round game 84-75 in overtime to Post Falls, Idaho, at the Coeur d’Alene Holiday Inn Express boys basketball tournament here Monday night.

Winston lit the scoreboard with 40 points, and Weisner tallied 20. Weisner also ripped off a game-high 11 rebounds.

Connor Hill led Post Falls with 21 points. Shawn Reid chipped in 20 for the Spartans.

The loss leaves the Blue Devils with a 4-2 overall record.

The Blue Devils led 17-12 after the first eight minutes and 32-28 at halftime.

Post Falls outscored Wa-Hi 43-39 in the third and fourth quarters for a 71-71 tie, sending the game into overtime.

"It was good game," Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. "We had a 10-point lead in the fist half. Then we had a couple of fouls and they got it down to four at halftime.

"We still had a three-point lead at the end of the third quarter," Golden continued. "They went up by four or five in the fourth quarter, and we battled back.

"Weisner hit two free throws with about 10 seconds to play that put us up 71-69," he said. "They came down and drove the lane, and a foul was called on Michael with two seconds to play. It was Michael’s fifth foul, and Marcus Colbert made two that tied the game.

"Then in the overtime we had a couple of turnovers, and they made a couple of shots. Then they just stretched the lead," Golden said.

"I was not disappointed in my guys, but I was disappointed for them," Golden said. "They battled and played hard. We had a few turnovers in the second quarter, but we thought we had this one.

"Gary was spectacular," Golden said. "He had 19 in the first half and 21 in the second half. He was 15-for-24 from the floor (with five 3s), Gary put on a show that I’m sure amazed some people. I just feel bad for the kids. They thought we had this one."

Wa-Hi went 15-for-18 from the line, and the Spartans went 26-for-35.
