COEUR D’ ALENE, Idaho — It took Wa-Hi’s girls the better part of three quarters to shake off the vacation rust, but once they did it was Katy bar the door.

After trailing 20-18 at halftime and 38-31 after three quarters, the Blue Devils outscored Lake City 17-5 in the game’s final eight minutes to secure a 49-43 basketball victory during the opening day of the Coeur d’ Alene Holiday Inn Express Classic.

It was Wa-Hi’s first game since a 63-45 Big Nine Conference victory at Eastmont on Dec. 19. And the Blue Devils held only one practice over Christmas vacation, according to coach Jill Meliah.

"You could tell we hadn’t played in quite a few days," Meliah said. And we only practiced once over the break, so it took us a while to shake the rust off.

"We started pressing in the fourth quarter," Meliah added. "We rattled them, we got some easy buckets and we got on a roll."

Jamie Weisner was a force for Wa-Hi in the fourth quarter, as she was the entire second half. After scoring nine points in the first two quarters, Weisner scored 11 of Wa-Hi’s 13 points in the third period and added 10 more in the fourth to finish the game with 30 points on 14-for-16 shooting from the field.

"She’s a competitor," Meliah said of her sophomore standout. "She doesn’t like to lose. And she decided to take over the ball game."

Part of the problem, Meliah said, was that her team lost its aggressiveness playing without a shot clock according to Idaho rules.

"It’s a different way of playing," Meliah said. "They were playing a zone and we were trying to be patient.

"But we talked at halftime about the difference between being patient and not being aggressive. And Jamie was kind of a leader for us in that aspect."

Vicki Reardon added nine points for Wa-Hi and Alicia Baker contributed three steals.

Lake City was led by Gina Mitchel’s 10 points. Sydney Butler added eight points and Jasmine Smith finished with seven.

Wa-Hi outrebounded Lake City 26-19, with Weisner pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.

The Blue Devils also forced Lake City into 16 turnovers in the game.

Wa-Hi, now 5-1 on the season, is back in action here this afternoon at 1 against Ceour d’ Alene. The Blue Devils close out tournament play Wednesday morning at 9 against Post Falls.
