Waitsburg-Prescott boys withstand rally, down North Powder

HELIX — Waitsburg-Prescott outscored North Powder 36-23 in the two middle quarters and then withstood a Badgers comeback in the fourth quarter to notch a 65-54 boys basketball victory here Tuesday night during the first round of the Helix Holiday Classic.

W-P took a 49-35 lead into the game’s final eight minutes only to see North Powder scramble back to within seven points. But a pair of 3-pointers by James Lehr and a third by Zac Alexenco enabled W-P to extend its lead and seal the victory.

Zach Bartlow paced a balanced W-P offense with 14 points, Lucan Gerke added 12 points and Ben Kiefel was also in double figures with 11.

Tenton Dixon and Gavin Kandle tallied 13 points each for North Powder.

Waitsburg-Prescott improved its record to 5-1 going into today’s 6 p.m. championship game against Klickitat.
