As the year 2000 approached, it seemed every paper in the world was doing a Y2K story, including The World newspaper in Coos Bay, Ore.
While other reporters sought out people building bunkers, stockpiling food or otherwise preparing for the end of civilization, I was assigned to visit local gun shops.
My first stop was Pistol River Firearms in North Bend. I still remember what the guy at the counter said when I asked if they were having a spike in sales.
"Oh no. Everybody's already got their guns. What they're buying is ammo. In case lots," he said.
