HELIX — Genesis Pearson turned in a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 19 rebounds to help Waitsburg-Prescott’s girls win the Helix Holiday Tournament with a 48-38 title game victory over the host team here Wednesday.

W-P, 2-0 at the tournament, improved to 5-2 on the season with the win.

Krystal Harris chipped in 10 points for W-P.

Kylee Rogers led the Grizzlies with a game-high 19 points.

W-P led 26-19 at the half and never trailed after that.

"It was a good game," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "Both teams played really hard.

"We knew coming in that Rogers would be tough, and she scored 12 of the 19 Helix points in the first half," he said. "But we played a little better defense on her in the second half.

"We were consistent offensively for the whole game, and I was really happy about that," Baker continued. "We wanted to improve out outside shooting and open up the inside, and we did that from start to finish."

W-P next plays DeSales in a 6 p.m. game at Waitsburg on Jan. 8.

Helix, which suffered only its second loss of the season, takes an 8-2 record into its next game Jan. 9, a Big Sky Conference East counter at South Wasco County.

"We’re hoping to have Megan Schroeder back in the next week or so," Grizzlies coach Dean Fouquette said of one of two starters that has been missing from the lineup due to injury. Schroeder is recovering from a broken nose and Brittny Smith is out with a knee injury that has ended her senior season.

"A school this size, when you lose a couple of starters, there just isn’t the depth to compensate," Fouquette said. "We’ve had to bring up some junior varsity players who are very, very inexperienced."
