COEUR d’ALENE — Gary Winston banged down 43 points to help the Wa-Hi boys defeat University High, 79-74, at the North Idaho College Holiday Inn Tournament here Tuesday.

Michael Weisner hit for 19 points, as well as grabbing a game-high eight rebounds, for the Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi went 2-1 at the tournament for a 6-2 overall record, and Winston earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.

"I’m running out of adjectives to describe how well Gary plays," Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. "He’s just so efficient. He hit 12-of-15 shots from the floor, including seven 3-pointers. And he went 9-for-14 at the free-throw line down the stretch. Gary’s play was definitely the talk of the tournament. He was just phenomenal."

Wa-Hi jumped out to an 18-14 first-quarter lead and stretched it to a 37-27 bulge by the intermission.

"We played very well," Golden said. "Our kids came out ready to play. Michael played well. Colton (Arias) scored six points in the first half to help get us started, and Zach Sumerlin scored five points in the first half."

Arias finished with a game-high six assists.

"Our defense held them to 27 points in the first half, and we knew going in that they were a good shooting team," Golden said. "But we defended well and rebounded well."

University outscored the Blue Devils 48-42 in the second half, but it couldn’t overcome the half-time deficit.

"They got it down to five early in the second half," Golden said. "Then we battled back to go up by 10 again and held on for the win."

Wa-Hi hit 10-of-15 free throws as a team in the fourth quarter.

"This was definitely a worthwhile tournament for us," Golden said. "We played three really good teams, and we finished with a 2-1 record. The kids were a little disappointed. They thought they should have won that first game (and overtime loss to Post Falls)."

Wa-Hi, 1-1 in the Big Nine Conference Cascade Division, returns to action with a division counter at Eisenhower on Jan. 9.
