Walla Walla University men drop a pair of games in Montana Tech tourney

The host Orediggers exact revenge with a 79-65 win one night after Northern Montana rolls past WWU by a 98-59 margin.

BUTTE, Mont. — Walla Walla University shot well enough to win here Sunday during the second day of the Copper Cage Classic men’s basketball tournament.

But host Montana Tech shot just a little bit better and defeated the Wolves 79-65, avenging an earlier 78-76 defeat at the hands of WWU Nov. 11 during tournament play at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

It was the second loss in as many nights for the Wolves, who were manhandled by Montana Northern of Havre 96-58 Saturday night in the first round of the tourney. The two losses dropped WWU’s season record to 2-7 going into ana exhibition game tonight at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

Against the Orediggers on Sunday, the Wolves connected on 23-of-53 shots from the floor (43 percent) and 7-of-19 from 3-point distance (37 percent). They sank 12-of-18 free throws.

But Montana Tech sank 22-of-47 field goals overall (47 percent) and connected on a radiant 13-of-22 3-pointers (59 percent). And they were successful of 22-of-32 shots from the line.

Mark Moore scored a game-high 22 points for the Wolves and Tristan Edwards added 15 points.

Dean Colbray led four Orediggers in double figures with 19 points. Brian Davison scored 14 and AJ Paine and Cole Conway added 13 points each.

Dirk Anderson snagged 10 rebounds for the hosts, who held a 37-28 advantage on the glass. Ryan Spady collected seven rebounds and Dauphin six for the Wolves.

Paine dished out 11 assists in the game.

Andrew Sellars scored 23 points to lead five Montana Northern players in double figures in Saturday’s lopsided victory over Walla Walla. Clay Greenland and Walynn Burgess snagged eight rebounds each as Montana Northern held a 34-29 rebounding edge.

The Wolves were led by Mark Moore’s 14 points. Johnny Long scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebbounds.
