Donations, families sought for 'Shop with a Cop'

The annual event pairs law enforcement officers with families in need.

Local law enforcement agencies are seeking donations and suggestions on qualified families for its 10th annual "Shop with a Cop" event.

The event takes select families on a shopping spree at a local retailer around the holidays, then surprises children with gifts from Santa.

The event is coordinated by members of the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office, Walla Walla Police Department, College Place Police Department, Milton-Freewater Police Department, Washington State Patrol and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Fraternal Order of Police Blue Mountain Lodge 9 hopes to raise $10,000 through local contributions that fund the event. The day of shopping, which will take place in the next few weeks, starts with breakfast, and is then followed with some of the children taking officers through the store to choose presents for their family members. The officers also get a chance to see what the child may want for Christmas.

Volunteers help by wrapping presents, and the day typically ends with a picture with Santa and the child receiving their own sought-after present.
