CALDWELL, Idaho — Eastern Oregon University broke open a close game and held off Whitman College over the final eight minutes for a 62-53 non-conference women’s basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Lady Yote Classic on the College of Idaho campus.

Whitman, which twice held one-point leads early in the second half, saw its early season record tumble to 1-3. The NAIA-affiliated Mountaineers upped their record to 5-3.

Senior Hilary White, who canned three 3-pointers, led Whitman with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior Anna Forge added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Missionaries also got six points and six boards from first-year guard Kelly Peterson, six points and five rebounds from senior Michelle Krall, and six points from Emilie Gilbert, another first-year guard. Krall, a four-year starter, played 16 minutes off the bench as she comes back from injury.

Two jumpers by Krall followed by a Gilbert 3-pointer had Whitman in front 19-15 with 5:25 left in the first half. The Mountaineers scored seven unanswered points and finished the half with a 25-22 lead when Alyssa Garro nailed a three with eight seconds left.

White’s 3-pointer at the 16:49 mark of the second half gave the Missionaries a 30-29 lead. Two minutes later, a jumper by junior guard Jenele Peterson produced Whitman’s final lead of the night at 35-34.

Following a basket by Eastern Oregon’s Tana Stickney, who collected 25 points and nine rebounds, Forge converted a free throw to even the game at 36-36 with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Kelly Peterson’s layin with eight minutes remaining brought Whitman to within three points at 46-43. But Eastern Oregon pulled away on a 11-3 run over the next five minutes to extend its lead to 57-46.

After White responded with another 3-pointer for Whitman with 2:52 left, the Mountaineers got a bucket from Salena Leavitt to return its cushion to double digits. Whitman was unable to mount a serious challenge over the final two minutes.

The Missionaries forced Eastern Oregon into 22 turnovers but made just eight of 16 free throws and fell short 40-32 on the backboards.

Whitman continues non-conference play next weekend with a pair of games against NCAA Division III schools in California. The Missionaries play at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday and at La Verne on Saturday.
