Pedestrian injured in hit-and-run crash

WALLA WALLA — A local woman was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Alder Street at Fifth Avenue this morning.

The crash occurred about 8 a.m. as Hazel Olson, 52, used the crosswalk in front of the Walla Walla County Jail and Sheriff’s Office.

City police officers, firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene.

The driver of the truck was heading south on Fifth and turning left onto Alder when she struck Olson and then drove off, said city police Officer Michael Thompson.

The driver, Aminda Paez-Diaz, 23, lives in Mexico and is in town visiting friends and family, Thompson said. Paez-Diaz left the scene to tell her family what happened, and from there went to the police station to report the accident. She faces a violation of hit and run with injury, officials said.

Olson was taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center, where she remained in the emergency room this morning, a nursing supervisor said.

Thompson said Olson suffered a broken right leg and some head lacerations, as well as bumps and bruises.
