Whitman's Roberg, Kaur fall short in NW regional semifinals tennis match

Alyssa Roberg and Divneet Kaur lose 8-5 to Willamette's doubles team.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — The Whitman College duo of Alyssa Roberg and Divneet Kaur fell one match short Monday of playing for the doubles title at the Wilson/ITA Pacific Northwest Regional Tennis Championships in McMinnville, Ore.

Playing in a Monday afternoon semifinal, Roberg and Kaur dropped an 8-5 decision to Willamette’s Shannon Palmer and Natalia Agarycheva.

Roberg, a first-year player, and Kaur, a senior, held an early 4-3 lead before their Bearcat opponents pulled ahead. Up 6-5, Palmer and Agarycheva took the next two games to close out the victory.

"It was a very competitive match," Whitman coach John Hein said. "There were a lot of close games and momentum shifts."

Playing competitive tennis as a doubles team for the first time, Roberg and Kaur "continued to play better from day to day during the tournament, and that’s all you can ask," Hein said.

In Sunday’s quarterfinals, Kaur and Roberg upset a second-seeded doubles team from Pacific.

The tournament concluded Monday when Linfield’s Sally Katter and Abby Olbrich outlasted Palmer and Agarycheva for the doubles title. Earlier in the day, Olbrich rallied for a three-set victory over Agarycheva in the singles final.

Whitman’s Elise Otto, who won the ITA’s fall tournament last year as a sophomore, is on foreign study this semester and was not on hand to defend her singles title. Otto also teamed with Katie Oost to win last fall’s doubles crown. Oost graduated last spring.
