WALLA WALLA — Whitman College senior Corina Gabbert, after booting four goals in two games last weekend, has earned Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week honors for women’s soccer.
The NWC gives two weekly awards for women’s soccer, one for players on offense and one for those on defense.
Gabbert, a two-time All-NWC First-Team player, had a hand (head or foot) in all five of the goals Whitman scored last weekend on its home field.
She headed home the only Missionary goal on Saturday against Willamette and then blitzed Linfield with a hat trick in a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
She also assisted on Whitman’s fourth score against Linfield, lofting a long cross from the sideline to the front of the goal, where it was headed home by a diving Amy Hasson.
"Corina tends to stand out on a soccer field," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "She is so fluid. Not too many players are creative enough to pass the ball ahead to themselves for a score."
Two minutes after that goal, Gabbert struck again, changing feet and direction a few times before drilling a shot from outside the 18-yard box to the upper left corner of the net.
Despite missing two games to injury earlier this fall, Gabbert leads the Missionaries in scoring with five goals and four assists. Sunday pushed her career totals to 31 goals and 10 assists.
Gabbert, a team captain for the past two years, has won one of the NWC weekly awards in each of the past three seasons. She was honored last fall after burning Linfield for a hat trick on its home turf in McMinnville.
