The first day of the week is the perfect time to put others first by participating in the Walla Walla Realtors Association annual food drive Sunday.
Volunteers will distribute bags in College Place and Walla Walla on Friday and Saturday, and pick them up Sunday beginning at noon. Filled bags should be placed in a highly visible location.
Folks who don't get a bag, are not collected from or miss the pick-up time can also donate at local grocery stores in marked barrels or call 525-0934.
According to recommended guidelines, home-canned goods and perishables should not be included in donations.
What is needed is canned tuna, peanut butter, box dinners such as macaroni and cheese, soups, canned and bottled juice and pantry staples such as flour and sugar, noted association executive officer Ginny Owens. "Also things like detergent and soap. If people are having a tough time buying groceries, they are having a tough time buying those, too."
She is hoping the drive can beat last year's total of 40,431 pounds of food, Owens said. As well, other events by the association brought in more than $8,000, which Blue Mountain Action Council Food Bank can turn into a great deal of food, she added. "And they need it more than ever this year."
In the 20 years she's been a part of the annual food drive, Owens has seen it grow into a serious undertaking by the entire community, she said. "I don't think we could handle the size of what it has grown to, just the Realtors. Everyone is a part of it."
