COLLEGE PLACE — Down two games, Walla Walla Valley Academy fought back and threw a premature Halloween scare into DeSales here Thursday night before the Irish escaped with a 27-25, 25-14, 23-25,18-25, 15-11 Southeast B District Southern Division volleyball victory.
"It was very scary," DeSales coach Lori Blanc said. "We knew we had to play tough. We knew we couldn’t sit back on our heels, and then we did just that in the third game.
"We had to work hard to pull it out in five," Blanc added.
Caitlin Duncan came up big for the Irish with 18 kills and 12 blocks, and Abby Larreau was an able assistant at the net with 11 kills and five blocks.
Amanda Warnick was the Irish floor leader with 26 assists and Jamie Majerus showed the way at the service line with a 22-for-22 effort and two aces.
Annie Higgins and Stephanie Ferrel contributed a pair of kills each.
For the Knights, Bri Leen was the kills leader with 10, Tori Buell led with six blocks and Sandy Avalos contributed a team-high 28 digs. Kristi Buell led WWVA with 13 assists and Kelsie Schafer was 18-for-18 from the service line with six aces.
"We’ve done a lot of maturing over the season," WWVA coach Scott Schafer said. "We got down two games, came back and almost pulled it off.
"It was a good experience. I saw some good things, and we are learning a lot."
DeSales, which travels to Dayton Thursday for a division counter, evened its league record at 3-3 and its overall mark at 5-5. WWVA, which travels to Liberty Christian Thursday, is now 4-5 overall.
