TEKOA, Wash. — Dayton hung in for a half here Friday night, but the Bulldogs lost their focus in the second half as Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia eased away to a 26-6 victory in the Southeast 2B-11 League football game.

The winless Bulldogs took the opening kick and marched 60 yards for the game’s first score and what has been a rare lead this season. Quarterback Colton Bickelhaupt found the end zone on a 10-yard run but the extra-point attempt was aborted and Dayton settled for a 6-0 advantage.

The Nighthawks responded later in the quarter on Zach St. John’s 8-yard touchdown run, and John Kuhn’s PAT kick put the home team ahead to stay.

But despite Kuhn’s 10-yard, second-quarter scoring pass to Brandon Hovde that put the Nighthawks on top 13-6 — Kuhn’s PAT kick was blocked — the Bulldogs went into the intermission feeling good about themselves, Dayton coach Tony Henderson said.

"We played the second quarter pretty well," Henderson. "We were competitive the entire first half and were feeling real good about it."

But two third-quarter Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia touchdowns put some added distance between the two teams. And the Bulldogs unraveled mentally as well.

"For the first time this season, the kids got preoccupied with the referees and started trash talking," Henderson said. "We got away from playing football. We got preoccupied with things that don’t belong on the football field."

It perhaps started when a Dayton snap from center wound up in the end zone and Hovde recovered it for a Nighthawks touchdown. The home team’s other third-quarter TD ame on St. John’s 6-yard run.

St. John led a balanced Nighthawks running attack with 54 yards on 12 carries. Kuhn completed 4-of-8 passes for 38 yards, and Hovde caught three balls for 33 yards and the one score.

Josh Frame had 47 yards rushing on 12 trips for the Bulldogs. Bickelhaupt was good on 8-of-14 passes for 97 yards, with Garrett Turner making five catches for 71 yards.

Dayton, now 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in league, travels to Pomeroy Friday. Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia, which plays at Liberty Christian Friday, is now 1-3 and 2-4.
