Walla Walla men deny stealing wallet in robbery

They are accused of attacking a man and stealing his wallet.

WALLA WALLA -- Two suspects pleaded innocent Monday in Superior Court to robbing a man as he was walking in the Eastgate area earlier this month.

Derek D. Schultz, 23, of 360 S. Fourth Ave., and Emmanuel Serrano, 23, of 150 S. Wilbur Ave., No. 61, are scheduled for trial Dec. 8 and 9.

Each defendant is charged with first-degree robbery.

They are accused of attacking Kevin Bidwell near White Street and Defense Avenue about 7 a.m. Oct. 14.

Police believe Serrano was driving his white Chevrolet Camaro with Schultz in the passenger seat when they came upon Bidwell. Bidwell told officials that the passenger got out, approached him and asked for a cigarette. When Bidwell said he didn't have one, the man reportedly attacked him. The driver also got out of the car and participated, according to a police report filed in court.

Bidwell resisted, but his wallet allegedly was stolen. Bidwell later was treated for facial injuries at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.

During the investigation, police found a Camaro outside Serrano's residence, gathered additional evidence and arrested the men the afternoon of the robbery.

Shortly before Bidwell was attacked, another man, Shane Miller, said he was chased by a passenger from a white Camaro parked at Barnaby's Bar and Restaurant, 405 Wellington Ave.

Miller reported that he outran the man and wasn't hurt.

Bail for Schultz was set at $75,000. Serrano was being held on $50,000 bail.
