ATHENA — Oregon’s Class 2A No. 6 ranked Elgin pulled out a surprise three-game Blue Mountain Conference volleyball victory over No. 1 ranked Weston-McEwen here on Tuesday.
The Huskies defeated the TigerScots 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22.
The loss gives the TigerScots a 13-1 conference record and a 33-5 record overall.
The loss didn’t affect Saturday’s district playoff schedule for the first-seeded TigerScots, however.
W-M already had a berth in the district’s final match against the winner of a noon match between No. 2 seeded Elgin and No. 3 seeded Union at Heppner.
"Our girls are a competitive group," W-M coach Shawn White said. "That loss will be a huge motivator for them."
The W-M leaders on Tuesday included Morgan Entze with 18 assists and six blocks; Jordan Reger with 14 assists and seven digs; Tiffany Cain with three kills; Renee Baumann with 10 digs and 12 kills; Presley Pahl with nine kills and four blocks; Jessica Stevens with three kills and eight blocks; Haley Freske with five kills and two blocks; and Leanne Harndon with five digs.
"Elgin played well all night," White said. "We just made some mistakes at times that hurt us.
"It just shows that we still have some things to work on," he added.
