WALLA WALLA — Corina Gabbert and Courtney Porter, the yin and yang of Whitman College women’s futbol, have been named Northwest Conference Student Athletes of the Week for women’s soccer.
Porter, an imposing 6-foot senior goalkeeper, won this week’s NWC award for defensive players. She faced 21 shots and made eight saves in posting shutouts against Pacific and George Fox.
Gabbert, a multidimensional midfielder-forward, netted the award for players on offense after contributing to all of Whitman’s weekend scoring. The 5-foot-8 senior captain booted three goals and handed out two assists.
It was Gabbert’s second consecutive NWC award and third in four weeks.
Porter has blanked her last three NWC opponents and has shutouts in four of her last five games. In NWC games only, she has five shutouts, which ties her for the conference lead.
Porter has six shutouts on the season, which ties her for second among NWC goalkeepers.
Porter also leads the conference in saves, averaging 5.77 per game against NWC foes and 5.81 against all opponents.
