HERMISTON — Walla Walla University opened its men’s basketball season at a neutral site here with a 103-67 loss to Eastern Oregon University on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers shot 78 percent from the floor in the first half, to 27 percent for the Wolves, and built a 57-32 bulge at the intermission.

Walla Walla was unable to recover.

Mark Moore led the Wolves with 16 points, and freshman Terrance Talton grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Steve Sawyers led EOU with 19 points and Jordan Gregg snared eight missed shots.

"They handled us a little bit," WWU coach Gerry Larson said. "Our shooting percentage for the game (32 percent) as opposed to theirs (68 percent) was the story, especially in the first half.

"And their points in the paint was a major factor," Larson added. "Our defense in the paint was atrocious.

"On the good side, we had some freshmen step up," he continued. "Freshman Terrance Talton came off the bench to lead us in rebounding, and freshman Tristan Greenidge played good defense.

"Where EOC is reloading, we are rebuilding," Larson said.

The Wolves play at College Place on Saturday, against Johnson and Wales, an NAIA school from Denver, Colo.

"We try to do a service project once a month," Larson said. "On Saturday, anyone coming to our game may get in free by bringing canned food.

"All of the canned food will be donated to the Christian Aid Center," he said.
