Citing an intent to pursue her passion for working with the psychology of organizations and individuals in private practice, Saffer told Walla Walla County commissioners her resignation will be effective Oct. 1.
She has been with the department since 2000 and was appointed director in February, 2001.
A search — for which the geographical range has not been decided — for Saffer’s replacement will begin immediately, noted commissioner said Greg Tompkins.
"This just happened yesterday, it needs discussion about how far to expand the job search. We will certainly look to experts in the social-service job field to help us make the decision, whether or not we should expand it to the West Coast."
Dave Hopper, assistant director of DHS, will assist with the transition period, Tompkins added.
