UMATILLA, Ore. — Shorthanded at the outset, Dayton was no match for Umatilla’s physical play up front here Friday night as the Vikings dominated the Bulldogs 32-0 in a season-opening non-league prep football game.
"They were very good up front, a senior-loaded front," first-year Dayton coach Tony Henderson said of the Vikings. "We lost the battle at the line of scrimmage."
Dayton was without four starters due to academic ineligibility stemming from last spring, Henderson noted.
"If you fail even one class during the spring quarter, you have to sit out one football game to begin the next year," Henderson said. "But I don’t want to take anything away from Umatilla. We weren’t completely decimated. We didn’t lose the game because of those missing starters, but we could have been more competitive if we had them."
Actually, seven Bulldogs are on the academic ineligible list because of poor work in the classroom last spring. But the Dayton administration agreed to allow Henderson to stagger the suspension, which means the other three will be held out of Thursday’s home opener against Enterprise, Ore. The game is being played on Thursday because of the Columbia County Fair that is held in Dayton over the weekend.
"By the third week of the season, we should have our full team together," Henderson said.
Umatilla piled up 307 yards of rushing against Dayton’s defense and scored on two runs of 35 yards each plus runs of 11, 5 and 4 yards. The Vikings led 20-0 after one quarter and had all of its 32 points on the scoreboard by halftime.
"We made some adjustments at halftime," Henderson said. "We plugged up some of our holes on the line and got some better play from our linebackers, who were a little too quick to flow on some plays in the first half."
Dayton’s offense, meanwhile, managed just 51 yards rushing and completed just one pass for one yard. The Bulldogs deepest penetration came in the second half when they reached the Vikings 4-yard line but came up empty.
"I’ll take the blame for that," Henderson said. "I didn’t make the right calls."
Henderson doesn’t expect quite as tough a test against Enterprise on Thursday. And he said his offense will focus more on running the football against the Outlaws.
"If there was a bright spot (Friday), it was that we could run the ball well if we executed up front," he said. "I’m still not convinced we can throw the football."
