WALLA WALLA — Oregon golfers took home the top prizes in the first Wine Valley Best-Ball Invitational that was held over the weekend at the Wine Valley Golf Club.
Brian Nosler of Portland and Brad Mombert of Bend hooked up for a 36-hole score of 131 to claim gross honors in the field of 28 two-man teams. Nosler and Mombert edged John Thorsnes, the head golf pro at Wine Valley, and his partner, Mike Kloenne of Portland, by one shot in the gross division.
Jim Pliska of Portland, who along with Thorsnes developed the Wine Valley course, and his playing partner, Todd O’Neal of Washougal, scored 133 for third place and George White and Jeff Marsh, both from Portland, shot 135 for fourth.
On the net side, Portland players Gregg Johnson and Bob Wolsborn shot 130 for 36 holes but needed two holes in a sudden-death playoff to edge Jeff Reese of Portland and Bob Curtis of Vancouver, Wash., for top honors.
A pair of Walla Wallans, Vince Jimenez and Max Reinland, shot 133 and tied for third place in net with two more Portlanders, Dan Hixson and Paul Regali.
