BOARDMAN -- The Mac-Hi Pioneers dragged their wagons west to the Riverside Volleyball Tournament here Saturday and returned with a hard luck 1-4 record and a few things to improve on.
The tournament format consisted of four one-set matches to 30 points, and a final two-set match to 25.
In the first match, Enterprise downed the Pioneers 23-30 with Sierra Burchell registering 3 aces.
In the second match, Mac-Hi downed the Umatilla Vikings 30-22 with Burchell contributing 3 kills and Stefanie Baker 2 aces.
From there, the tournament went south for the Pioneers with losses to Wallowa (21-30), Irrigon (19-30) and Elgin (14-25, 18-25).
"The win against Umatilla was a great win for us," said Pioneer coach Elizabeth Ellis. "To be honest, the girls played really hard, and they never were blown out of the water. We stayed in the games and kept pushing to get points and start some volleys.
"We were able to play two games with Elgin (a standout team) and we even managed to hold it together against them. Yes, there were some mistakes, but all-in-all, I'm quite proud of our performance."
At the end of the day, our passing has improved, our serving was outstanding today, and digging was also good. Our weak point is hitting, but we are going back to practice this week to continue trying to hit harder so that we can improve there as well.
