COLLEGE PLACE - After committing four errors and watching Blue Mountain Community College launch three long-balls in a 10-2 Timberwolves win, Walla Walla University bounced back to take a 2-1 lead to the seventh of the nightcap.

But Blue Mountain scored twice in the seventh to pull out a 3-2 victory and sweep the non-conference softball doubleheader here Thursday.

"It was a great game, especially after the first game," WWU coach Mike Jimenez said. "In the first game, we showed that we had 10 days off (for spring break). I'll take a loss like that (the second game). We were in the game, competing and giving ourselves the chance to win. They (the Timberwolves) came through with the clutch hits at the end and found a way to win."

Blue Mountain grabbed a 1-0 lead on Kara Katchia's sac fly in the first inning of the second game. That was it for the Timberwolves as Ashley Martinez slammed the door until the fateful seventh inning.

Martinez blanked the Timberwolves on four hits and struck out the side in the sixth before BMCC could scratch out another run.

"That was the best outing all year from her (Martinez)," Jimenez said. "She's had a strained hamstring and we weren't sure how she would do today. It was exciting to see her throw like that."

The Wolves evened it at 1-1 as Touchet alum Sonja Kelsay ripped a two-out RBI single in the WWU fourth. Kelsay's second hit of the game - and the fourth of the day - plated Danielle Pulley, who had singled with one out to start the rally.

Walla Walla got singles from Pulley and Martinez, and Kelsay drew an intentional walk to load the bases for Elizabeth Jones in the home sixth. Jones took a two-strike conference with Jimenez.

"She wanted to take a breather," Jimenez said. "Basically, I told her that ‘we've been working on reps trying to hit it to right field.'?"

Jones hit the next pitch to right field for a single to plate Pulley with the go-ahead run.

"She put a good swing on it," Jimenez said. "It (the ball) found its way between second and right field."

Blue Mountain's Jamie Paxton doubled home Courtney Hancock, who walked to lead off the seventh, and Paxton came home on a fly to short-right that was caught by WWU second baseman Aubrianne Iwasa. Iwasa's throw to the plate beat Paxton, but Paxton's slide jarred the ball loose and the Timberwolves had the lead at 3-2.

Paxton, in the circle for BMCC, worked a perfect 1-2-3 seventh to nail down the victory and complete the sweep.

The Timberwolves got three home runs - a second-inning, three-run blast from Hancock, a third-inning solo shot from Paxton, and the clincher in the sixth when Katchia ripped a three-run drive - and took advantage of four Wolves errors to take a 10-2 win in the opener.

In the sixth, WWU gave the Timberwolves two extra outs on dropped pop-ups. It proved costly as BMCC scored four unearned runs, the last three coming with two outs on Katchia's homer, to run the BMCC lead to 10-2.

"We missed some spots with our pitching," Jimenez said. "They took advantage of that, and our defense behind our pitching was not the best."

Walla Walla next hosts Wenatchee Valley on April 11.
