Waitsburg-Prescott picks up softball sweep of Asotin

PRESCOTT - Waitsburg-Prescott swept a pair of Southeast 2B softball counters from Asotin here Saturday, squeaking past the Panthers 11-10 in game one, and squashing them 15-3 in game two.

W-P jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after one inning and an 11-5 advantage after three, but had to hold on through a scoreless seventh to seal the victory, 11-10.

W-P had no intention of letting the second game get that close, jumping on the Panthers early and often with three, five, two and five runs in the first four frames. Asotin could only counter with three runs. The game ended on the mercy rule after the Panther's half of the fifth.

"We played without three girls on spring vacation and one girl who hurt her ankle in practice yesterday. We were a little shorthanded," W-P coach Angie Potts said.

"We needed to get that first game over with. Asotin is not a stronger team than we are," she said. "It's the same thing we've done throughout the year. We start strong and then expect the game to be over and get complacent.

"We cut down the number of errors (in the second game) and that was huge. We played defense the way we needed to play defense, and we were more aggressive on the bases."

W-P's sweep raised its record to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in league.

W-P is off until Saturday when it travels to DeSales for a double-header against the rival Irish.
