PASCO - Wa-Hi's Drew Reinland was the only player to break par here Monday during a boys Big Nine Conference pod golf match at Sun Willows Golf Course, but it wasn't enough to keep the Blue Devils in contention for team honors.
Hanford, led by Tanner Martin and Kim Scott, won the team championship with a 302 score, barely edging Richland, West Valley and Southridge in a tightly contested affair atop the team standings.
Martin shot even-par 72 and Scott was just a stroke behind him at 1-over 73 to pace the Falcons. Jack Eiden's 2-over 74 was good for a share of seventh place individually and led Richland to a 304 team total; Eric Graubrot matched par-72 and led West Valley to a 305 tally; and Southridge's Nick Mandell also shot par 72 as the Suns finished next at 306.
Pasco came next with a 314 score, with Kamiakin sixth at 319 and Wa-Hi tied for seventh place with Wenatchee, both in at 328. Kennewick shot 341, Eastmont and Moses Lake 342 each, Chiawana 357 and Eisenhower 375. Davis had an incomplete team and Sunnyside was a no-show.
Richland, on the strength of a first-place finish in the only previous pod match at Horn Rapids last month, leads after two tournaments with 29 points. Hanford is a close second with 28.5 points. Wa-Hi finds itself in eighth place with 19.5 points heading into the third of five pod matches April 15 hosted by Kamiakin at the Tri-Cities Country Club.
Reinland, the Lewis-Clark State College-bound Wa-Hi senior and defending Big Nine individual champion, carved out a 1-under 71 Monday on a cloudy, windy, sometimes rainy day to win by one shot and take the top spot in the Big Nine individual standings after two tournaments. Reinland has accumulated 124 points and is narrowly in front of Southridge's Mandell, who is at 122.7.
Jake Hanson of the Blue Devils managed a 5-over 77 Monday and finished in a three-way tie for 15th place individually with Matt Rezendes of Richland and Matt Michelson of West Valley. But the Blue Devils' next score was an 89 by Travis Morrison, who finished in a five-way logjam in 48th place. Dean Atkinson's 91 shared 53rd place and was Wa-Hi's final counting score.
Gunnar Leighty shot a non-counting 93 for Wa-Hi.
Also finishing just a shot behind Reinland Monday was Kamiakin's Riley Hayfield, who matched par-72.
Saul Martinez of Pasco and Kameron Lamb of West Valley shot 74s to share seventh place with Richland's Eiden. Jeffrey Marcum of Richland and Austin Westphal of Southridge tied for 10th place with matching 75s.
Wa-Hi's Hanson has 81 points after two pod matches, good for 16th place, followed by Morrison 32nd with 47 points and Atkinson 45th with 22.5 points. Nick Atwood, who didn't play Monday, ranks 47th with 18 points.
