Irish find offense late, down Coyotes 5-4

BURBANK - DeSales did all of its scoring in the final three innings and came away with a 5-4, eight-inning victory over Burbank here Tuesday in a non-league prep baseball game.

The Coyotes plated a single run in the second inning and three in the third to grab an early 4-0 lead. But Victor Mata, who came on in relief of starting pitcher Matt Wujek in the fourth inning, pitched five scoreless inning and saved the day for the Irish.

"Victor was very sharp with his location," DeSales coach Kim Cox said of his right-hander. "He did a nice job of changing speeds. That's the best he has thrown since he has been here."

DeSales rallied for two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to knot the score at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Irish pushed across what proved to be the winning run with two out when Mata was hit by a pitch after DeSales had loaded the bases on a singles by Shane Roach and Wujek and a walk to Tommy Gregg.

But Mata still had to work out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning. He got the first out by snagging a line drive, the second when a two-strike squeeze bunt-attempt trickled foul and the third on an infield grounder to shortstop Pat Richard.

"It's pretty rare in a high school game to get away with something like that," Cox said.

"I think after the game, the kids kind of felt like they hadn't really won it," he added. "We didn't do anything to win the game, they kind of gave it to us at the end."

Dylan Byrd started on the mound for Burbank and pitched five scoreless innings. But two Coyotes relievers were not nearly as effective.

"He did a really good job," Cox said of the Burbank starting pitcher. "He struck out one and walked three, but Logan Hoeft's single was the only hit he gave us. He just threw the ball across the plate and let us get ourselves out."

Hoeft's sacrifice fly accounted for DeSales' first run in the sixth inning, and Shane Roach's infield grounder brought home the second. In the seventh, Pat Richard doubled and later scored on a Coyote error, and Travis Haen tied the game with an RBI double.

DeSales improved to 5-2 on the season and returns to Southeast B District play Saturday when it entertains Waitsburg-Prescott in an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Ray Lane Field. The Irish and the Coyotes will get together again April 13 in a single non-league game at Borleske Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
